The Golden Rabbit was inspired by Joseph Beuys, a German artist from Düsseldorf painting himself gold while talking to a live hare. Upon first arriving at the house (the Improvisor In Residence Moers house), Shea and Namenwirth noticed a couple of hares hopping around the front yard. Namenwirth recalled Shea wearing a hat resembling the one Beuys wore during his many lectures. There was an empty white couch in the residence begging to be occupied. Namenwirth and Shea ventured out into the town looking for something to occupy that space. They found an enormous teddy bear at Woolworths costing €50 but realized they had a lot of basement detritus that could be implemented into the right scale creature…a Golden Rabbit. After spending late night constructing the garbage, cardboard, packing tape and discarded Ikea curtains and spaghetti and bottle caps, they searched for the second Beuys hat for Namenwirth to wear during the performance. There was success in creating the creature but failure in finding the hat.

In 2021, Shea moved to Germany for a year to continue his studies after being awarded Moers Festival’s 14th annual Improvisor In Residence music scholarship. The Golden Rabbit was developed, created and conceived of entirely at the improvisor in residence house when Namenwirth visited Shea there in November 2021.
